A recent research article published by investigators from the University of Alabama explores the needs of rural communities in West Central and South Alabama regarding hearing loss. The study involved interviews and focus group discussions with adults with hearing loss, their friends and family, and community members. Four themes emerged from the analysis, including communication and hearing loss issues, social and emotional issues, dealing with hearing loss, and addressing hearing loss in the community. The research concludes that future care for adults with hearing loss in rural communities will require interprofessional collaboration and increased access to hearing health care.
