Abstrakt: A recent study conducted by researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) examined the outcomes of risk-reducing total gastrectomy (RRTG) in individuals with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer syndrome. The study found that RRTG was associated with significant short- and long-term complications, including weight loss, chronic complications such as bile reflux and dysphagia, and adverse psychosocial effects such as occupation change, divorce, and alcohol dependence. The researchers concluded that these life-changing adverse events should be taken into consideration when counseling patients about gastric cancer prevention. The study highlights the importance of considering the real consequences of organ removal in cancer-prevention surgery. [Extracted from the article]
