Abstrakt: A study conducted at the Federal University of Para in Belem, Brazil, focused on the treatment of leishmaniasis, a complex disease caused by infection with different Leishmania parasites. The researchers isolated a compound called (-)-5-demethoxygrandisin B from the leaves of Virola surinamensis, a plant found in the Brazilian Amazon. They found that this compound exhibited leishmanicidal activity against both promastigote and intracellular amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis. The compound targeted the mitochondria of the parasite through inhibition of the trypanothione reductase enzyme. The study utilized in vitro and in silico approaches to evaluate the compound's activity. [Extracted from the article]
