Abstrakt: Selenium status in cattle depends mainly on selenium content in feed rations. Soil and plants in many regions are often poor in this trace element. Selenium deficiency in farm animals may increase oxidative stress, which contributes to various diseases. Oxidative stress induced by deficiencies of selenium and other dietary antioxidants has a deleterious effect on health status of cows and their calves. Moreover, it can impair reproductive performance. Dietary requirements for antioxidants in cattle can be elevated during the periparturient period and other situations associated with oxidative stress. The aim of this paper was to present the aspects connected with selenium and oxidative stress in cattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
