Several different treatments were investigated in an endeavour to increase the permeability of oyster sperm to substrates; most of them were unsuccessful. However, allowing sperm suspensions to stand at low pH decreased the endogenous respiration but allowed substrate effects to be demonstrated more clearly than with untreated sperm. This acid treatment removed a desoxyribose derivative from the sperm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
