Abstrakt: Wind-pumps was familiar equipment for salt industries in northern Java Island as main component in traditional salt making process. The salt farmer has skills to produce, operate and maintain the traditional wind-pump, thus saving operational cost. This experiment aimed to modify the wind-pump to wind energy converter (WEC) generating electric for battery charging. The blades were come from and usually used by salt farmer as main components of wind-pump for brine lifting at Babalan-Wedung, Demak Region, Central Java, Indonesia. The traditional blades diameter was 185 and 200 cm. Pumping mechanism elements of wind-pump was removed and replaced by a permanent magnet generator. The experiment was held on Kuwaru beach, Bantul Region of Yogyakarta, southern of Java Island. The beach was chosen for atmosphere as similar as its habitat of the traditional wind pump. The experiment successfully modified and observed blades of traditional wind-pump as WEC for electric generation and storage the electric into battery. The result showed that both blades be able to generate electric energy of 124.6 and 369.6 watt-hour, respectively, in 375 minutes and charged to battery as an energy storage. Performance both of the blades were similar and resulted the average WEC efficiency of 6.6 and 7.0 percent, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
