This article focuses on identification and analysis of land cover changes in a selected area of city district Bratislava-Nové Mesto, which belongs to the Small Carpathian wine region. This part of Bratislava has a long tradition of producing wine that has been documented since early 11th century. Over the centuries, vineyards in Bratislava had multiple periods of progress and decline. Since 1989 vineyards in Slovakia and especially in Bratislava have rapidly declined and are being replaced by new housing areas and infrastructure. The aim of this article is to present the changes in vineyard areas using old maps as source material and analyse quantitative and qualitative aspects of land cover changes with focus on vineyards. The analysis was realized on several levels: 1. change of vineyards' area as a whole 2. change of vineyards' area concerning the individual vineyard classes 3. change of landscape cover class of vineyards into different classes, and their summation into classified groups, 4. increase and decrease in land area of vineyards expressed spatially.
