To date, other than NSAIDs, there have been no oral targeted therapies approved for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) or non-radiographic axSpA. Furthermore, only approximately 45% to 50% of patients show an Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society 40 (ASAS40) response and only approximately 15% to 20% achieve a state of remission in biologic-naive patients, and response rates are even less in axSpA patients who had an inadequate response to bDMARDs. Based on the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) axSpA criteria, the disease can be further divided into 2 categories by radiographic findings: ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and an "early" form of axial SpA, referred to as non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (nr-axSpA).
