Abstrakt: Sand boiling is a common and dangerous event that can cause human and financial losses, especially downstream of earthen dams, shoreline, and embankment erosion as well as to the coastal zone in general. This study aimed at investigating the heave potential downstream of the earthen dam using the 22 obtained data from boiling tests of Sufian and Firuzkuh sand in Iran. Laboratory techniques such as uniformity coefficients (Cu) and relative compaction (Rc) were used on the critical hydraulic gradient of the soil, while numerical techniques were used to determine the safety factor against sand boiling in addition to the amount of discharge. The results showed that both Cu and Rc improved sandy soils against boiling. The results further showed that well-graded sand soils not only performed well against hydraulic failure but also increased the safety factor of the dam against heave in the numerical model. By improving the soils of Firuzkuh and Sufian with geotextiles, the boiling results of these samples indicate that reinforcement of the samples and the increase in the number of geotextile layers increased the critical hydraulic gradient of the samples against hydraulic failure.
