This article discusses the transformation of our understanding of the Cold War in Latin America, highlighting the importance of local dynamics and the autonomy of domestic social and political forces in shaping the region's conflicts. The special issue of Radical Americas focuses on the relationship between local dynamics and global ideological tensions during Latin America's Cold War, using a biographical lens to explore the emergence of a culture of militancy among the Latin American left. The articles in the issue examine the personal experiences of militants from various countries, highlighting the tension between isolation and a search for belonging and solidarity. The themes of vanguardism, personal transformation, and belonging and solidarity are explored throughout the articles, shedding light on the complex nature of militancy during this period.
