Abstrakt: The clinical, biochemical and pathological findings in two cases of congenital lymphatic oedema in Ayrshire calves have been described. Clinically, the outstanding feature was oedema of the head and limbs. Biochemically, there was hypoproteinaemia and a high protein content of the oedema fluid. Pathologically, there was a developmental abnormality of the lymphatic system which was more severe in the peripheral lymph nodes and their associated vessels. The pathological findings suggest that the congenital defect was associated with disturbances of tissue growth and not differentiation. Since the main pathological changes were found in the peripheral lymphatic vessels and the secondary and tertiary lymph nodes, it would appear that the developmental abnormality commenced at a period following the formation of the primary lymph nodes.
