Abstrakt: The article describes the case of an infant with a relatively mild meningococcal illness which, although diagnosed and cured within 15 days of onset, demonstrated the clinical picture of chronic meningococcemia. The term prolonged mild meningococcemia was used to differentiate the child's course from the far more common acute fulminating pattern. The medical history of the infant and the results of laboratory findings and physical examination are presented. Prolonged or chronic meningococcemia is defined as meningococcal blood stream infection which persists longer than three days without meningeal involvement. Complications include meningitis, carditis, anemia, nephritis, epididymitis, thrombocytopenia, conjunctivitis, iritis or retinitis in order of decreasing frequency. Penicillin and sufisoxazole were administered for a total of five days.
