Carbonates based thermochemical storage systems are very promising given their high energy density and low toxicity. Nevertheless, there are few literature data about their thermodynamic and kinetic features, which are necessary parameters to evaluate the exploitation of these materials for practical applications. The purpose of the present work was to investigate the kinetics of the carbonation-discharging step, which represents the rate determining process of this accumulation medium. At this aim, a dedicated experimental campaign was carried out, considering two different temperatures (600 and 700 °C) and several carbon dioxide partial pressures. The results show that the discharging reaction can be fitted with a Multigrain Shrinking Core model, and that the conversion rate is independent from temperature, while the effect of gas diffusivity increases from 600 to 700°C.
