In road design, construction and maintenance work, drainage is one of the most important factors need to be considered. Drainage systems are designed to ensure that the water being transported smoothly to the discharge points. lt needs to be maintained to produce a well-drained and waste-free environment. Design of the drainage is imperative to avoid difficulties and problems to the road users. Poor drainage system may create damages and problems on the road users and pavement. Moreover, improper drainage on roads caused the increase of expensive repairs or replacements long before reaching their design life. For that, this research aims to put forward the issues contributed to the poor drainage system on road, with the objectives: 1) to identify the impacts of poor drainage, and 2) to suggest the best solution to mitigate the impacts of poor drainage. A mixed method is applied to achieve the objectives through questionnaires randomly distributed to 90 road users and interviews were conducted with two (2) local authorities. The results were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS and qualitatively using content analysis. The results reveal that moisture content, decrease in strength, mud pumping, waves and corrugations and stripping in bituminous are the identified impacts from the poor drainage system. Suitable solutions to mitigate the impacts have been identified: among others, proper maintenance, proper design for drainage systems, public awareness, storage ponds swell as inspection and monitoring. The local authorities play avital role in managing the drainage system by enhancing their standard operating procedures to avoid the occurrence of poor drainage system in future. The findings of this research are hoped to assist in reducing the impact of poor drainage towards the resilience of road pavement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
