Construction project management is unique compared to other industries. The statistics of a project's progress show that most construction projects fail to reach time and budget goals, and many completed projects fall short of delivering their customer expectations. Various development strategic plans were executed, but the result remains unsatisfactory. Differences between knowledge and reality are often the reason for weak project implementation. This paper argues that there is still a gap between what researchers need to know about construction project management and what is currently being practiced. Based on this central gap, this paper presents a historical narrative of project management and how it changes in the Malaysian construction industry. Using content analysis of selected international journals and Malaysian Economics Development Plan, the chronologies of Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBoK) from pre-industrialise era, industrialise era until the standardization of the PMBoK was uncovered. The evolution highlights that social, economic, and political development influenced the development of the PMBoK for the country. Mapping it with Malaysian Economic development plan, we discover the uniqueness of BoK for Malaysian Construction Project Management. This suggests that it is necessary to adapt international standards and tailor them to the specific situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
