Ferrocement is a thin wall reinforced concrete where the cementitious matrix being embedded with closely spaced layers of wire mesh as defined in ACI 549R-97. Lightweight foamed concrete is slowly become more attractive in construction due to its low density and good thermal and sound insulation properties, but it also possesses lower strength. By referring ferrocement concept, introduction of mesh reinforcement to confine the lightweight foamed concrete block deemed feasible to allow improvement on strength properties. This study was performed to evaluate the effects of application of hexagonal wire mesh and square wire mesh by ferrocement concept on compressive and flexural strengths of 1000 kg/m³ lightweight foamed concrete block and beam respectively. The test results show the ranges of 13 to 16% and 21 to 26% improvement on compressive strength of foamed concrete block, while the range of 23 to 27% and around four times improvement on flexural strength of foamed concrete beam by incorporation of one layer of hexagonal wire mesh and square wire mesh respectively. In short, both wire meshes are feasible to be incorporated in production of foamed concrete block and beam to enhance its compressive and flexural strengths which square wire mesh provides relatively much better results.
