Abstrakt: China's Response to U.S.-led Initiatives to Secure Critical Minerals Supply Chains Chinese policymakers are not feeling entirely secure about China's existing dominance in the critical mineral supply chains. In July 2022, Japan and the United States launched the U.S.-Japan Economic Policy Consultative Committee (EPCC) to "foster supply chain resilience in strategic sectors, including, in particular, semiconductors, batteries, and critical minerals." In this context, U.S.-led critical mineral supply chains initiatives that aim to counter China's dominance inevitably clash with the Chinese government's interests in securing mineral resources for China's industrial development. By working with GCC nations and members of the EU at the group level and at the bilateral level, ASEAN can broaden the ASEAN Plus mechanism to facilitate intraregional and interregional dialogue and policy coordination regarding securing diversified and resilient critical minerals supply chains.
