The popular cultural system among the Bedouin of the Negev region has throughout history given shape to Bedouin thought, customs and ways of life. Fairy tales, treating a variety of themes and possessing various styles, are among the most important elements of this system. They constitute a fundamental basis for the inculcation of the values and traditions of the Bedouin of the Negev. These fairy tales' roots can have a variety of sources. The roots of some are lost in antiquity while others evolved over the centuries, borrowing various constructions from ancient myths and human lives that helped shape the Bedouin fairy tale. The present paper deals with the roots of Bedouin fairy tales and attempts to identify their sources, be they mythical, religious or totemisticfetishistic.
