The reactive behavior of PBX type explosives under quasi-isentropic 'ramp wave' loading conditions represents a challenge both in experimental generation and hydrocode modelling. A sapphire material graded areal density flyer system was used to ramp load PBX 9501 explosive using a two-stage gas gun; and the reaction of the explosive observed using the particle velocity gauge technique. The experimental data was compared to hydrocode modelling utilizing the CREST and AWSD reactive burn models. While 3-D modelling proved impractical due to a lack of suitable material models, 1-D modelling utilizing a 'varying initial conditions' technique was successful. The results showed that ∼microsecond rise time ramp loadings produce minimal reactive growth in PBX 9501 compared to sustained shocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
