Abstrakt: Colonialism and Sri Lanka's Water Technology The achievements in water management and irrigation during the reign of King Parakramabahu signified the zenith of their development. Introduction The earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka, the indigenous Yakka people, were building irrigation tanks prior to the colonisation of the Sinhalese under King Vijaya around 500 BCE, but little remains of their achievements. Records on canals, irrigation works, tank proprietors, water taxes and irrigation grants show that by the end of the 2nd century, the state bureaucracy was in charge of water management.
