Summary: This study proposes Myrciaria caerulescens as a new species from the Espinhaço Range, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia. The new taxon is a fruiting species that has been cultivated among Brazilian horticulturists since 2018 and has been misidentified as M. guaquiea in herbaria over the last two decades. This study provides the morphological description of the new taxon along with taxonomic notes, a distribution map, a morphological plate and preliminary conservation status. We also confirm that M. guaquiea, also commonly cultivated and previously reported for the state of Bahia, actually occurs exclusively in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. A brief historical assessment regarding the cultivation of M. guaquiea in Brazil is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
