Early identification of hearing impairment is critical in preventing speech and language delays, as well as psychosocial and cognitive delays. Hearing loss does not have to be severe to result in educational and economic harm to the individual. Medically, these infants are often diagnosed as mentally retarded, autistic, braindamaged, or schizophrenic. The mean age at diagnosis of profound congenital deafness is 24 months. Mild to moderate delays are not diagnosed until an average of 43 months of age, since the indicators of hearing impairment during early childhood are somewhat subtle behavioral clues rather than medical symptoms. |
