Rehabilitation counselors working in fields such as vocational rehabilitation and forensics have been responsible for serving individuals with complex and multiple disabilities for decades. Given the increase in prevalence of dual diagnosis acquired and developmental disabilities and mental health conditions, a greater focus has been placed on understanding the nuances of these disabilities. However, large gaps remain in the employment outcomes for these dual diagnosis conditions. Lack of understanding among rehabilitation professions regarding the complexities of serving dual-diagnosis populations will perpetuate disparities in employment outcomes for these populations. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the concepts of dual diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder, traumatic brain injury and mental health conditions to offer a more robust discussion regarding implications on employment outcomes and service provision across various rehabilitation settings.
