STUDY TO ASSESS KNOWLEDGE REGARDING ANTENATAL CARE AMONG PRIMI GRAVIDA MOTHERS REGISTERED IN TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL IN VIEW TO DEVELOP PERINATAL SERVICE PACKAGE.

Abstrakt: Background: Antenatal care is defined as a comprehensive antepartum care programme that involves co-ordinated approach to medical care and psychosocial support that optimally begins before conception and extends throughout antepartum period. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study design used to assess knowledge of antenatal care among primi gravida mothers registered in tertiary care hospital in view to develop perinatal service package. Primigravida mothers in first trimester attending outpatient Obstetrics and Gynaec department,samples selected by Random sampling technique to select 144 Primigravida mothers in first trimester on their first antenatal check up. Structured interview was conducted to collect demographic data. Assessment of existing knowledge regarding antenatal care,done by applying pre-test. A structured knowledge questionnaire was administrated to assess knowledge of Primigravida mothers regarding antenatal care . Results: Majority mothers belongs from age group >25 years i.e.24(33.3%), Most of mothers 57(79.2%) were resident from rural population. majority of samples are Hindu i.e. 68 (94.4%). Maximum mothers completed graduation i.e. 30(41.7% ) and only 2(2.8 %) mothers were illiterate. There were 20 (13.9%) primigravida mothers having poor knowledge, 118(81.9%) having average knowledge and 6(4.2%) were having good knowledge. It was found that, maximum number of primigravida mothers having average knowledge and few mothers having good knowledge. There was no association found between demographic variable with pretest knowledge score except education of mothers. Study concludes that, majority mothers had knowledge deficit and there was need to develop perinatal service package and organize teaching and counseling sessions for antenatal mothers along with care takers to upgrade their knowledge and skill from first trimester to post natal period.
