A survey on the diversity and distribution pattern of herpetofauna was undertaken in Gupteswar Forest Range of northern Eastern Ghats of India. We carried out the survey over a period of six months from November 2017 to April 2018 in nine microhabitats spread over varied terrain in tropical deciduous and sal-dominated forests including grasslands, plantation areas, perennial streams, and limestone caves. The study revealed 45 species of herpetofauna which includes 14 species of amphibians under five families and 31 species of reptiles under 11 families. Maximum species assemblage was recorded in topsoil microhabitat, whereas brooks showed a high abundance of amphibian species, and leaf litters were found to provide a diverse microhabitat for herpetofauna. The survey indicated the importance of Gupteswar Forest Range in Eastern Ghats in relation to herpetofaunal diversity. We recommend long-term monitoring of herpetofauna relating to human activities. The information generated from the study will aid in re-evaluating the conservation status of herpetofauna in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
