The article reports that mobile health units as health delivery vehicles have been proved useful in screening programs, in providing rehabilitative services to the physically handicapped, in administering critical care to coronary patients, and in reaching alienated youths. Especially in developing countries have such units been helpful as extensions of rural community hospitals in providing primary care. Insufficiently studied has been their applicability to meeting otherwise unmet medical needs in localities within larger urban centers of America. The subject of this report is a survey of clinical experiences within pilot program conducted under the auspices of the Pediatrics Ambulatory Service at Kings County Hospital Center in dispensing health care in two localities in Brooklyn, New York, using a mobile health unit. Through a series of meetings with community organizers, a plan of action was defined. This included scheduling the Mobile Unit's visits to the community, utilizing a central location, and organizing local community workers to manage the publicity aspects of the programs. |
