In the contemporary urban environment, a complex of natural and anthropogenic sedimentation processes takes place, as a result of which a significant amount of sediments of dust and dirt is formed. The aim of the study is development and testing of approaches to the dust and dirt sediments as an indicator of ecological and geochemical state of urban environment. The studies were carried out on the territories of large cities of Russia differing in lithogenic substrate and located in different natural-climatic and economic zones. During the study, the granulometric, chemical, and mineral composition of the contemporary surface deposited sediments in the areas of multistory residential buildings has been determined. Some patterns and trends in the formation of environmental and geochemical situation, and also the indicators of alteration in the geochemical conditions of cities have been discovered.
