Abstrakt: Ionic Liquids (ILs) have been increasingly exploited as reagents in many applications due to their "green" properties as well as their tunable physicochemical and biological properties. One of them is the pretreatment of crude palm oil prior to the refinery process, which can improve the characteristic of palm oil. The basic ionic liquids contain basic anions that effectively reduce the acidity of Free Fatty Acid (FFA) without resulting in saponification. In addition, treating glyceride oil with basic ionic liquids typically removes the pigments. The first objective is to determine the palm oil extraction yield through the fruit selection process. Next, to study the effect of the pretreatment process for Crude Palm Oil (CPO) by using ionic liquids (ILs) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [emim][BF4] solution on the various part of fruit samples such as top, middle and bottom part by observing the characteristic of CPO based on the pH value, color and structure of the molecule. The methodology of the experiment started with fruit sample selection. Next, the extracted CPO and [emim][BF4] solution will undergo mixing and separation. The result indicated that the middle part of the palm oil fruit has the most palm oil content compared to the others. For the result characteristics after the treatment, it is indicated that the pH of CPO was changed at a range of 9 – 15% to become more neutral. Other than that, the color of CPO has become more apparent where the average wavelength of each sample reduced from 651 nm to 641 nm and the molecule structure of CPO does not have a significant change. In conclusion, the quality of the CPO can be enhanced by implementing this method before the refinery process, as the CPO can be further refined under acceptable conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
