Abstrakt: Large-diameter longitudinal reinforcement (D43 [No. 14]) and multi-spiral reinforcement were examined for use in the construction of concrete columns to reduce labor demand. Two full-scale columns were tested to investigate their seismic performance. The test column was reinforced with large-diameter longitudinal reinforcement (D43 [No. 14]) and the control column with normaldiameter longitudinal reinforcement (D36 [No. 11]). Both columns were laterally confined by five-spiral reinforcement. Test results showed that the seismic performance of the test column was similar to the control column. Both columns showed ductile behavior with good energy dissipation. Based on the test observations, a buckling model was developed to predict the buckling behavior of longitudinal bars laterally supported by five-spiral reinforcement. Based on the proposed model, it was found that for the same amount and within the practical spacing range of five-spiral reinforcement, the calculated buckling slenderness ratio and hence the compressive stress-strain behavior of D43 (No. 14) bars is similar to that of D36 (No. 11) bars.
