Numerical investigation on flexural performance of hybrid concrete T-beams.

Abstrakt: Hybrid concrete beams are ordinarily created inadvertently as a result of remedial action on old concrete beams deteriorated due to exposure to severe environmental conditions. Therefore, this paper presents a numerical analysis of the overall behaviour of hybrid concrete T-beams in case of being remedied with high-performance concrete (HPC) in addition to the normal concrete (NC) being utilised in the compression zone. The main objective is to find out and adopt equations that determine the flexural capacity and mid-span deflection of hybrid T-shaped concrete beams. To achieve that, five hybrid reinforced concrete T-beams besides the control beam, having five replacement ratios (RR) 13%, 25%, 33%, 42%, and 50% were modelled and analysed under two monotonic concentrated loads using finite element software. The overall flexural failure mode was controlled for all analysed beams. In terms of serviceability requirements, the results obtained were first cracking and mid-span deflection, which disclosed good improvement in the range of (32-84%) and (30-65%) compared with the control beam. On the other hand, the flexural capacity of hybrid specimens increased by about (18-39%). Finally, based on the finite element results collected, two coefficients were adopted to calculate the ultimate flexural strength and maximum mid-span deflection of the hybrid beams, giving Coefficient of Determinations (R2) values of 0.9997 and 0.9994, respectively.
