Photonic Crystal Hydrogels (PCHGs) or Free standing Photonic Crystals (FSPCs) are gaining interest as colorimetric sensing platforms due to their selectivity and ease of fabrication. Photonic crystals (PCs) can modulate EM waves by virtue of their periodicity in dielectric constant throughout the macroscopic structure. This periodicity is designed to be of the order of wavelength of light leading to a photonic stopgap. Herein we detail the synthesis and optical studies of vertically self assembled free standing 3D PC films of 3 different photonic stopgaps (blue, green and red). A polystyrene (PS) colloidal crystal was initially self assembled on a glass substrate using mono disperse PS colloidal spheres. It was then sandwiched in a Polyethylene Glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) based hydrogel matrix by inserting the pre-gel solution into the colloidal crystal template. The resultant PC free standing film was obtained by peeling off from the glass substrate, after performing photopolymerisation. Optical characterizations of the prepared blue, green and red free standing PC films were carried out using Ocean Optics HR4000 spectrophotometer. These films could be used for sensing applications by functionalizing them appropriately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
