This article reports that epidermolysis bullosa is a disease of the skin characterized by blister formation, after friction or slight trauma.' The skin and mucous membranes are affected by blisters and scars which are frequently disabling and may require surgical repair. Cutaneous lesions predominate on the soles and palms, while the mucous membranes commonly involved include the mouth, larynx, esophagus, lung, and the conjunctiva of the eye. A 5.5-year-old Hispanic male was admitted to the Urology Service with the chief complaint of painful urination. He bad been diagnosed as having epidermolysis bullosa at 3 days of age and was considered to have the recessive dystrophic type. Physical examination revealed crusting lesions around the nares, and blisters present on lips, hands, legs and feet; the penis had a pinpoint meatus with some scarring on the glans. Another report mentioned two cases of urethral stricture secondary to epidermolysis bullosa treated with cold knife urethrotomy. |
