Abstrakt: The article presents information on Counterimmunoelectrophoresis. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) has been shown to be an effective diagnostic aid in infectious diseases.' Since it is based on an immunologic precipitin reaction and is therefore highly specific, we chose to evaluate its usefulness as a diagnostic tool for Group B Streptococcal (GBS) infections. The increasing incidence and high mortality rate of neonatal GBS infections create a need for an accurate yet rapid diagnostic test. CIE is a useful method for identifying GBS antigen in culture media and patient samples. It is effective in patient evaluation as an adjunct to standard bacteriologic cultures and smears, and results can be available in a few hours. While accurate and specific, CIE is not as sensitive as culture in certain biological fluids. Some samples of blood and cerebrospinal fluid which grew GBS were negative by CIE.
