The article presents information on the onset of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) in Childhood. TLE in childhood is more variable and difficult to diagnose than in the adult. The inability of younger patients to describe their aura is one obvious explanation for this. Further, the benign character of the spells which are often short and not associated with obvious motor manifestations helps to explain why they are frequently missed. A retrospective study of the past histories of 125 patients in whom temporal lobe epilepsy developed during childhood has brought out a number of significant clinical points. The criteria for selection included a clinical picture of TLE, a temporal focus on EEG, and adequate past history. The age of onset of TLE was found to be earlier than previously recognized. The incidence of abnormalities of development, behavior disorders, and episodal nocturnal phenomena was significantly higher than in a matched control group of 117 normal children, sufficient to make this syndrome of practical confirmatory value in the diagnosis of TLE in early childhood. |
