Abstrakt: This article discusses the massacres of African American soldiers from the French Army in 1940 by the Germans. When the German army fought in France in May and June 1940, it encountered a large number of black African soldiers who had been drafted into the French army. Whereas German troops, with some notable exceptions, treated white French prisoners of war according to the Geneva convention on the treatment of prisoners of war (1929), they dealt with the black Africans in a way that anticipated the horrors of the racialized warfare associated with the later German campaigns in the Balkans and the Soviet Union.
