Eight patients are reported who all have one feature in common, the appearance of premature ageing. Six of these could be accurately classified into previously described syndromes, but the other two may represent a new syndrome which we have called metageria. Clinical and other features of these two individuals are compared with three patients with acrogeria (Gottron's syndrome), one with pangeria (Werner's syndrome), one with progeria (Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome) and one with a total lipodystrophy (Lawrence's syndrome).
