In the mid-Northern Song Dynasty, the revitalization movements of Confucianism unfolded on a magnificent scale . Zeng Gong, known as one of the Eight Great Men of Letters of the Tang and Song Dynasties, made outstanding contributions in many domains . Zeng vigorously advocated Description of reason in literature and historiography; exposed the evils of heresy, and adhered to Confucianism as the orthodoxy; called for the teaching ideas of the ancients in the revival of education; pursued the Confucian political ideal of benevolent government ; and investigated the problem of cultivation and rites.
