Flexible biofilm carrier is usually hanged underneath the structures (e.g. ecological floating bed) as a filler to provide surface for microbial growth, and the present studies focus on the effects of carrier type and hanging density on water purification. In this paper, for the purpose of further increasing the population of microorganisms to enhance the efficiency of water purification, a bench-scale experiment with the varied hanging patterns, for example spiral hanging pattern, was conducted investigating the effects of different hanging patterns on the biomass and water purification under the condition of either high or low pollution loading. The experimental study concluded that the removal efficiency of four water quality parameters (total phosphorus, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and COD) by using the carrier of spiral hanging pattern group (L) were higher than the ordinary hanging pattern group (C) (P<0.05) irrespective of pollution loading (high or low)the increases in terms of the above four parameters was 19.4%-30.0%, 19.2%-35.7%, 18.3%-24.0% and 12.0%- 15.3%, respectively, aside from that, biomass on the carrier and its microbial community structure showed that the spiral hanging pattern could significantly improve the oxygen environment and boost the carrier biomass and then enhance the pop ulation of microorganisms related to nitrogen and phosphorus transformation. Meanwhile, the water purification effect was consistent with the population of microorganisms related to nitrogen and phosphorus transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
