The article reports on a new method for measuring open-sea wave conditions. The method is beneficial for measuring wave height and direction with centimeter accuracy uses a single commercial-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver on a buoy. This low-cost wave-height sensor is developed for open-sea operations, to provide data that will improve wave prediction models. Three-dimensional GPS positioning data also enable us to measure wave direction. The article further discusses the concept of the GPS-based wave sensor, algorithms for filtering and extracting wave data and the results of open-sea trials. |
