The article is dedicated to the term “abbreviation” from the point of view of its coining and functioning in the aviation industry. The article sets its focus on the history of abbreviation, the reasons of abbreviations emerge in the language, the mechanisms of their formation as well as the peculiarities of abbreviations functioning in the language. The authors of the article provide various approached to abbreviations classification, pointing pros and cons of each of them.
