The earliest surviving Hungarian translation of the Song of Songs is found in the Döbrentei Codex, produced in 1508. The paper's primary goal is to present the Old Hungarian text in normalized orthographical transcription, which facilitates its reading by presentday readers. This goal is also served by other sections of the paper. These include an introduction describing the codex and the text under study, a rich body of footnotes highlighting translation issues, and a vocabulary section offering explanations of Old Hungarian words.
