In examining the affinities between the Hungarian and the (North) Saami languages, János Sajnovics found that the Hungarian orthography would have been more suitable for the North Saami language than the Danish-based orthography he had learned from the literature. In my study, I will investigate whether Sajnovics's proposal had any influence on the history of North Saami orthography, and what reflections were made on the orthographical "reform" by his contemporaries and linguists of later times.
