This article focuses on the Third Latin American Popular Theater Festival, which brought together theater artists from nine countries including the U.S. for the presentation and celebration of popular theater. In the New York Public Theater's Anspacher theater, plays of political and artistic importance were greeted with enthusiasm in an atmosphere of national and international support. Theater in Latin America has a long history as a political and educational tool, but its development in the last few decades has been towards a theater of increasing artistic integrity. The majority of the plays are concerned with social and class issues, often openly advocating revolution, solidarity among the people of all nations, and political activism. |
