Abstrakt: This article presents data on the characteristics and needs of undergraduate Women Off-Campus residents, one group of whom was surveyed by the author in the spring of 1960. Off-campus living may carry only the virtue of necessity, since the commitment of the university understandably is to campus residence; but the possibility cannot be dismissed that there are in this setting useful experiences in independent responsibility. Permission to live off-campus is given to all undergraduate women if space is unavailable in campus residence halls. The Off-Campus Housing Office lists available accommodations, but it does not approve them. Responsibility for the rental of a particular accommodation is assumed by the student and her parent or guardian. However, the Office directs all undergraduate women seeking off-campus housing to its women's counselor for consultation regarding the listed facilities. Responses indicated that the Office was being extensively used for this purpose. Moreover, ninety-two per cent of the respondents in this study classified themselves as upperclassmen.
