The article discusses Swedish-Finnish return migration. According to Swedish law all persons living in the country shall be registered in the parish where they live. In accordance with this principle, up-to-date population registers are maintained by the clergy of the Evangelical-Lutheran Swedish Church in each of the approximately 2600 parishes into which Sweden is divided. Weekly returns are furnished by each parish to the National Central Bureau of Statistics in Stockholm, Sweden, who maintain a computerized Register of the Total Population. Each person on the register is allocated a ten-digit personnummer. This number is used as an identifying tag in the provision of most legal, social, and personal services. It is possible, therefore, to follow a cohort of immigrants and record their subsequent remigration behavior. For the period 1968-1976 the relevant data have been published by age, sex, year of entry into Sweden, and citizenship at the time of entry. To be registered as an immigrant, the intention must be to stay in Sweden for at least one year. |
