Why is the surfactant system an important consideration in lung transplants? From the goal-directed viewpoint of clinicians, the answer lies in the possibility that aberrations as a result of lung grafting could be among the factors contributing to lung transplant failure. From the perspective of those whose interest is primarily in the physiological and metabolic aspects of surface active materials, the importance of lung grafting as a method tor studying the surfactant system is the opportunity it presents to study the effects of denervation. We shall begin our discussion with a summary of how the surfactant system could effect the outcome of lung grafts and proceed to consideration of surfactant as part of the reimplant (autograft) response. Next, the effects of allograft responses (rejection) upon surfactant shall be discussed, and finally a projection into the future shall be made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
