The diameter of the aortic annulus was measured roentgenologically before operation in 78 patients with aortic disease who underwent replacement of the valve by a ring-supported fascia lata graft. Factors influencing the accuracy of the measurements are discussed. Calcification of the cusps, for example, increases the error of measurement. In about 65% of the patients with calcific deposits on the cusps the error was less than 2 mm. In three patients the preoperatively constructed fascia lata graft could not be used because of the large discrepancy between the annular diameter obtained roentgenologically and the true diameter. In 87% the roentgenologically determined diameter of the aortic annulus was correct. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
