Eleven cases of the rare cardiac anomaly, combined mitral and aortic atresia, are described. The numerous clinical and pathologic peculiarities of this syndrome are discussed. A salient feature of this variant of the hypoplastic left heart syndronic is the consistency of its clinical and pathologic characteristics. While the apparent increasing incidence of the lesion could be explained by improved autopsy techniques and greater curiosity on the part of prosectors, it seems most likely that the increased frequency of occurrence is real. Negative historic data in all cases studied precludes at this time the formulization of a rational etiologic theory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
