An alternative aorto-pulmonary shunt procedure using autologous pericardium has been successfully performed in dogs. Tubes of pericardium from 3 to 6 mm in diameter were constructed over #12 and #14 Foley stents and anastomosed end to side from aorta to left pulmonary artery in fourteen dogs. Early results showed patency in thirteen of fourteen dogs examined, although late results were poor. Thrombus formation was observed in all late cases of occlusion. Although there are advantages to this procedure in that non-distensible, readily available material can be used to make anastomotic tubes of any size or length, our results would not warrant a clinical trial at this time.
