Abstrakt: This article focuses on scientific and technical information services in Japan. Although hitherto scientific information activities have not been effectively organized, recent developments certainly promise a prosperous future, and the establishment of a centralized organization will greatly promote progress. As in many other countries, libraries constitute a major part of the scientific information resources. First, the language and orthography of Japan differ greatly from those of the Western countries, and uniform treatment of information is difficult. Second, though the need for Western information predominates, it is difficult to handle completely the huge volume of information originating in Western countries. The role of union catalogs is of the greatest importance in Japan, because the collection of foreign materials is severely limited by geographical and economic conditions.
